Ahhh...back in Chicago

My flight was delayed for 4 hours!!! Thunderstorms at Ohare...
the line for cabs at the airport was 3 blocks long....I ended up sharing a cab with two other people. one of which ended up being a pretty interesting person. He was an older bespectled gentleman with a stylish white beard and dressed to the nines. turns out he is surgeon and head of medical education at the University of South Florida. Once I told him I was also a doc and came to Chicago for fellowship, he decided to tell me what he was studying. He just got his PhD in industrial engineering. I was confused so the rest of the cab ride was him explaining his ideas to me. Which were just AMAZING.
This guy is taking principles from industrial engineering and applying them to medicine. The inefficiency, the redundancy, the waiting around, the lack of productivity, he has very interesting ideas on how to make the hospital more efficient and doctor-friendly. He said the only reason most hospitals aren't falling apart is because they have residents....resident he said are the glue that hold the medicine system together. This guy was beyond fascinating and kept going on an on about how the hospital needs to be out the hands of the MBAs and back into the hands of doctors and engineers who could then help increase productivity/safety/efficiency and not just look at the bottom line and keep cutting programs.
Anyways, I thought it was an interesting cab ride as I enter my fellowship here.
Hope all is well. Have a blast in tahoe. miss you guys!

Hey guys,
This is me on my honeymoon! Mike was there too, I promise. He took the picture. We had a great time in St. Lucia swimming and relaxing all day. I've just moved to Boston and I start my orientation this Thursday. I found out that part of my orientation will spent with new interns! Aagh! Have a fantastic time in Lake Tahoe. Try not to get folliculitis or any other hot tub communicable illness. I wish I could be there.

Love, Meg
